The Basics
If you've just found Allswell and want to understand who we are, who we work with, and how the process works before going any further, this is a good starting point.
What is Allswell?
Allswell is a virtual therapy practice that specializes in affirming, trauma-informed care for LGBTQ+ people and the communities that support them.Β
Our therapists come to this work with a real understanding of the experiences LGBTQ+ people may carry into a session. That foundational knowledge means your sessions can focus on you, not on educating your therapist.Β
All sessions happen through secure video, and we accept Medicaid and many major insurance plans in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC.Β

Who does Allswell serve?
We specialize in therapy for LGBTQ+ adults across a wide range of identities and experiences, including people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, queer, transgender, nonbinary, gender-diverse, and questioning.
We also welcome anyone looking for a supportive, inclusive therapy environment, regardless of how they identify.
Our therapists are currently licensed in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC, so you'll need to be physically located in one of those areas at the time of your session.

How does Allswell work?
The process from first call to first session looks like this:
- Book a free consultation. Schedule a 15-to-20-minute call with one of our Care Coordinators. You'll share what you're looking for, ask any questions you have, and get a sense of whether Allswell feels right for you.
- Get matched with a therapist. Based on your consultation, we'll connect you with a therapist whose experience, approach, and availability fit your needs. We'll also verify your insurance and let you know what to expect cost-wise before your first session.
- Complete your intake. Once you're matched, you'll fill out some brief intake paperwork through our secure client portal. This helps your therapist prepare for your first conversation.
- Attend your first session. Your first appointment, also known as your Welcome Session, is 60 minutes. It's a chance for you and your therapist to get to know each other, talk about what's bringing you to therapy, and start building a plan together. There's no pressure to have everything figured out.
- Continue with ongoing sessions. After your Welcome Session, follow-up appointments are 45 minutes. Most clients meet weekly, but your therapist will work with you to find a pace that feels manageable and supportive.
How do I know if Allswell is right for me?
Allswell may be a good fit if you want a therapist who already has a foundational understanding of LGBTQ+ life and the kinds of experiences that can come with it.Β
Our therapists work with clients dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, identity exploration, relationship challenges, family conflict, and more. You don't have to identify as LGBTQ+ to work with us, and if you're not sure, a free consultation call is a low-pressure way to find out.

Starting Therapy
Starting therapy can bring up a lot of questions, especially if it's your first time or if past experiences have made you cautious about the process.
How do I get started with therapy?
Book a free consultation with one of our Care Coordinators. You can schedule a call through our website or reach out by email at hello@joinallswell.com or by phone at 443-543-8367.
There's no referral needed and no commitment involved. It's just a conversation about what you're looking for and whether Allswell can help.

What happens if I decide to sign up for therapy after a consult call?
After your consultation, our team will match you with a therapist based on your needs, preferences, and schedule. We'll verify your insurance and let you know your estimated cost per session before anything begins.
From there, you'll complete a brief intake through our secure client portal, add a payment method, and schedule your first appointment. Most clients are able to get on the calendar within a week or two.

Who are Allswellβs therapists?
Every Allswell therapist is a licensed clinician with experience in LGBTQ+ affirming, trauma-informed care.
Many of our therapists have specialized training in evidence-based approaches such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), mindfulness, and play therapy.
Our team also reflects the communities we work with, with therapists who are transgender, nonbinary, BIPOC, and neurodivergent.

How do I decide what therapist to use?
You don't have to figure this out on your own. Your Care Coordinator will recommend someone based on what you share during your consultation, including the kind of support you're looking for, any preferences around identity or therapeutic approach, and your availability.
If after a session or two it doesn't feel quite right, that's okay. You can request a change at any time by emailing hello@joinallswell.com, and we'll help you find a better match.

What typically happens in a therapy session?
Your first session is 60 minutes and is focused on getting to know each other. You'll talk about what's bringing you to therapy, your goals, and any background that feels important to share.
There's no pressure to cover everything at once, and your therapist won't push you to go further than feels comfortable.
After that, ongoing sessions are 45 minutes. What you work on in each session depends on your goals and what feels most relevant at the time. Your therapist will follow your lead.

How often should I go to therapy?
Most clients start with weekly sessions, which helps build momentum early on. If weekly works for you, you can schedule a recurring appointment to keep things consistent.
Over time, you and your therapist may adjust the frequency based on how things are going. Some people eventually move to biweekly sessions, while others benefit from staying weekly longer.

Paying for Therapy
Cost can be one of the biggest barriers to getting care, so we've tried to make this part as clear and manageable as possible.

Can I use a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) to pay for therapy?
Yes. We accept both HSA and FSA card payments for therapy sessions. You can add your HSA or FSA card as your payment method through our secure client portal.
Current Clients
If you're already working with an Allswell therapist, these are some of the things that come up most often.
What happens if I need to rebook or cancel my session?
If you need to cancel or reschedule, we ask that you provide at least 24 hours' notice whenever possible. This helps us offer the time to another client who may be waiting for an appointment. Non-Medicaid clients may be charged a $50 fee for no-shows or late cancellations.
What happens if I want to end therapy or change my therapist?
Both are completely okay. If you'd like to switch therapists within Allswell, you can email us at hello@joinallswell.com and we'll help you find a new match.
If you'd like to end therapy, you're welcome to discuss that with your therapist or reach out to our team directly. There's no long-term commitment, and the decision is always yours.
